De video-tentoonstelling Ombres laat zich inspireren door het beeld van de schaduw zoals deze in de oude oosterse leer van het ‘Mohisme’ (samen met het ‘Confucianisme’ één van de twee meest vooraanstaande filosofische scholen in China tussen 403-221 V.Chr.) beschreven staat. In het boek 'Variontology 3', dat een reeks studies over kunst, wetenschap en technologie in het oude China bevat, wordt de schaduw als een positieve entiteit ervaren: “The Mohist optics is primarily the study of shadows. Already the first proposition regarding the phsysics of ‘the visible’ celebrates shadows in a very special way, namely as positive. Here the question under consideration is whether a shadow can move under his own volition. ‘A shadow does not shift’, says the Mohist canon and propagates the view that a shadow is a product of the moment and constantly renews itself, it is a sensational event of an instant.”
